It is this belief that inspired the World Public Welfare Alliance Foundation (WPWAF) and the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) to jointly launch WIRA Cancer Activation 2026, a community-driven initiative dedicated to raising awareness of lung health and promoting preventive healthcare.

Rethinking Public Welfare: Prevention Before Treatment
Public welfare is often associated with helping people after illness, disaster, or hardship has already occurred.

While these efforts remain essential, there is another equally important form of public welfare—helping people before disease changes their lives.

At WPWAF, we believe that the highest form of compassion is prevention. Every illness detected early represents not only a better medical outcome, but also a family spared from unnecessary suffering. That is why this initiative is about far more than organizing a screening event.

It is about building a healthier community through awareness, education, and early intervention.

More Than Just a Chest X-ray
Many people assume that lung screening simply involves taking a chest X-ray.

Today, modern lung cancer screening has evolved far beyond that. Participants of WIRA Cancer Activation 2026 will be introduced to NCSM LungShield – the Integrated Lung Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Kit, an innovative programme designed to support early detection through a structured diagnostic pathway.

The process begins with an AI-assisted Chest X-ray, where artificial intelligence helps healthcare professionals identify areas that may require closer medical attention.

It is important to note that AI does not replace physicians. Instead, it serves as an advanced clinical support tool, enabling healthcare providers to conduct faster and more consistent preliminary assessments while allowing doctors to make the final medical evaluation.

A Complete Pathway from Screening to Diagnosis
One of the defining strengths of NCSM LungShield is that the journey does not end with the initial screening.

When the AI-assisted Chest X-ray identifies a suspicious pulmonary nodule, eligible participants may proceed to a Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) scan for further assessment.

Should additional investigation be required, a lung biopsy may follow. If lung cancer is confirmed, participants may then proceed with Reflex Molecular Testing and CT Thorax, Abdomen and Pelvis (CT TAP) staging, helping physicians determine the most appropriate treatment strategy. Rather than providing only a screening test, LungShield offers an integrated diagnostic pathway designed to help individuals move efficiently from detection to diagnosis.

Peace of Mind Beyond the Screening
One of the greatest concerns people have after undergoing health screening is the potential cost of follow-up investigations.

Recognising this challenge, NCSM LungShield includes LungLife, a complementary insurance component that supports eligible participants by covering subsequent diagnostic procedures when abnormalities are detected through the AI-assisted Chest X-ray, in accordance with the programme's terms.

This integrated approach removes an important barrier that often prevents individuals from pursuing further medical evaluation. Because early detection only creates value when it is followed by timely diagnosis.

On 17 October 2026, WPWAF and NCSM will bring together 1,000 participants at Sunway Square Mall, in an ambitious attempt to set a Guinness World Records™ title for the Largest AI-Assisted Lung Health Screening Event.
